Biography
Derrick M. Kelly, Esq., is a Senior Partner in the Miami office. Derrick focuses his practices on general liability, premises liability, automobile negligence, trucking liability, product liability, negligent security, sexual misconduct liability and commercial litigation. He also handles construction liability matters, including bodily injury, wrongful death claims, contract disputes, roadway construction and design and defect claims. Derrick defends insurance carriers, their insureds, and other business and corporate entities.
Currently, Derrick is an instructor with the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA) teaching deposition and trial skills. NITA provides trial advocacy training to lawyers of all experience levels, both through national seminars and dedicated programs that train and develop ethical legal advocates to improve the adversarial justice system. Prior to becoming an attorney, Derrick was a law enforcement officer with the Broward County Sheriff's Office for nearly nine years where he received specialized training in conducting and managing investigative interviews and high-profile investigations in his roles as a major crimes detective and sergeant. He has extensive training handling compliance issues and advising on strategic planning, risk management, and crisis response.
Derrick received a Bachelor of Arts from Union Institute and University (2005). He obtained a Master of Science from Florida State University (2008). Derrick earned a Juris Doctor from William Mitchell College of Law (2009). While in law school, Derrick competed in national moot court competitions and received distinguished honors for oral advocacy. At graduation, Derrick received the Student Award of Merit for his contributions to the law school.
Derrick is admitted in Florida (2009). He is also admitted in the United States District Court for the Northern (2019), Middle (2019) and Southern (2019) Districts of Florida.
