TBI Strategies: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Defense Strategies

These tools are often presented to juries as objective proof of permanent brain damage. However, many of these technologies remain controversial, highly dependent upon methodology, operator judgment, software algorithms, control group selection, and interpretation.

Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) Challenges

Fractional Anisotropy (FA): The Devil Is in the Details
Many plaintiff experts rely upon Fractional Anisotropy (FA) measurements to claim structural injury to white matter tracts.
However, FA values can vary significantly based upon:
- Region-of-interest placement
- Measurement methodology
- Inclusion of gray matter versus white matter
- Scanner settings
- Software processing
- Statistical modeling
Even small differences in methodology can materially affect reported values.

Tractography: Impressive Images, Significant Limitations
Tractography uses DTI data to generate three-dimensional visual representations of neural pathways.

Most importantly, tractography does not directly visualize axons. It merely infers potential pathways based upon water diffusion patterns.
